Report: Google Fiber Coming to Austin, Texas

From DailyTech: When Google first started to experiment with fiber-optic internet service it put out proposals to have cities around the country vie for the opportunity to have service first. Ultimately, Kansas City was chosen as the location to get the first Google Fiber installations.

Reports have now surfaced that indicate that Google and the city of Austin have sent out a number of invitations to an event that will be held next week. Sources have told Venture Beat that the event could involve the expansion of Google Fiber internet service.

However, there is some indication that the announcement could be for the opening of a Google campus in Austin. There is also a chance that this could be nothing more than the city of Austin choosing Google for some software project.

The invitation reads:

On Tuesday, April 9, at 11 a.m., the City of Austin and Google will make a very important announcement that will have a positive impact on Austinites and the future of the city. We anticipate more than 100 community leaders and elected officials to be in attendance to celebrate this announcement. The event invitation is attached for your convenience. Although we cannot share the details of the announcement with you in advance, we know readers will want to learn more, so we encourage you to join us on Tuesday.
