AMD Introduces World’s Fastest Mobile Graphics Processor

From X-bit Labs: Advanced Micro Devices has introduced what it claims to be the world’s highest-performing mobile graphics processor, the Radeon HD 8970M. The new solution is generally similar to its predecessor, but comes with different clock-speeds and a set of software, which should make it faster in video games and more-efficient in general-purpose applications.

“Today’s gaming notebooks need a graphics card that is fast, powerful and energy-efficient. The AMD Radeon HD 8970M GPU is the perfect combination of technologies, blending performance, immersive features and an extensive battery life that delivers an unrivaled gaming experience, even on the go,” said Matt Skynner, corporate vice president and general manager of graphics business unit at AMD.

AMD Radeon HD 8970M is based on GCN architecture as well as code-named Pitcairn GPU design. The graphics chip features 1280 stream processors, 80 texture units, 32 render back ends and 256-bit memory bus. The chip operates at 850MHz by default, but can automatically overclock itself to 900MHz if thermals allow.

The mobile versions of AMD Radeon HD 8000 support a number of technologies specially designed for notebooks, including AMD’s Enduro technology, which allows GPU to optimize battery life. The power features are inherently dynamic, delivering instant performance when needed and adjusting GPU requirements when in idle mode.

The AMD Radeon HD 8000M-series “Solar” graphics processors support all the advantages that the graphics core next (GCN) architecture has to offer, including support for DirectX 11.1, OpenCL 1.2, OpenGL 4.3, PCI Express 3.0, AMD Eyefinity 2.0, ultra high-definition output support using DisplayPort 1.2, HDMI 1.4a, optimized power consumption, integrated 7.1 audio controller, stereo-3D/Blu-ray 3D support, and other new technologies.
