WD Unveils World's Thinnest 1TB Mobile Hard Drive

From X-bit Labs: Western Digital Corp. on Monday announced that it is shipping the world’s thinnest 1TB hard drive, the 2.5”/7mm WD Blue. The drives are aimed at thin notebooks as well as ultrabooks that need plenty of storage space at a low cost.

WD Blue 1TB (WD10SPCX) hard disk drive in 2.5”/7mm form-factor features 5400rpm spindle speed, 16MB cache and Serial ATA-6Gb/s interface. Western Digital declares 5.5ms average latency as well as peak power consumption of 1.7W. The HDD features a number of WD’s patented technologies designed to make hard drives faster, more reliable and quieter, such as ShockGuard, WhisperDrive, StableTrac and Dual Stage Actuators.

"Users with large portfolios of content no longer need an Ultrabook or upgrading to a thin and light notebook. This most compact 1TB hard drive to-date offers manufacturers of systems an upsell path for their customers who will now be able to choose systems offering both sleek design and high capacity,” said Matt Rutledge, vice president and general manager for client storage products at WD.

Acer and Asustek Computer have already announced plans to use the WD Blue 1TB inside their new notebooks. Shipping now through select distributors and resellers, the new 1TB WD Blue 7 mm 2.5” mobile hard drive is covered by a two-year limited warranty. MSRP for the 1 TB is $139.
