From X-bit Labs: Qualcomm, the world’s largest supplier of application processors for smartphones, this week introduced Snapdragon 400 system-on-chip that is designed for low-cost smartphones with 4G/LTE connectivity. The Snapdragon 400 family is the first to offer multimode 3G/4G-LTE on application processors with both dual-and quad-core CPU configurations for high-volume smartphones. “By offering a multimode 3G/4G LTE variant to Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 tier of processors with quad-core CPUs, we are ensuring that emerging regions are equipped and prepared for the imminent transition to multimode 3G/4G LTE, in addition to being equipped for every major 2G and 3G technology. Snapdragon 400 processors provide customers with a wide range of innovative smartphones for both the high-volume and mid-tier segments,” said Cristiano Amon, executive vice president and co-president of mobile and computing products at Qualcomm Technologies. Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processors will exist in different configurations, with four ARM Cortex-A7 cores clocked at up to 1.4GHz, with two Krait 300 cores with up to 1.7GHz clock-rate, with two Krait 200 cores clocked at up to 1.2GHz. Other functionality will be generally similar: LPDDR2/LPDDR3 memory controller, Adreno 305 graphics engine, 3G/HSPA+, 4G/LTE, integrated Qualcomm Vive 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, FM, NFC and dual-SIM capabilities. The Snapdragon 400 will support up to 13.5MP cameras, 1080p video capture and playback, up to 1280*720 display resolution and advanced audio. The new application processor from Qualcomm fully supports all the latest power management technologies from the company, including asynchronous multi-processing (aSMP) dynamic CPU power control for sustained peak performance, dynamic GPU clock and voltage scaling as well as Qualcomm Quick Charge 1.0 for up to 40% faster battery charging. The chip is made using 28nm LP process technology. Qualcomm Technologies will also be releasing a Qualcomm Reference Design (QRD) version of the Snapdragon 400 processor with integrated multimode 3G/4G LTE. The QRD program provides device manufacturers with comprehensive handset development platforms and access to third-party providers of tested and verified hardware and software components. Under the QRD program, customers can rapidly deliver differentiated smartphones to budget-conscious consumers. There have been more than 200 public QRD-based product launches to date in collaboration with more than 40 OEMs, and there are currently more than 100 designs in progress.
