From X-bit Labs: Many market observers believe that emergence of 4K ultra-high-definition TVs in the next several years will shorten the life-cycle of next-generation video game consoles, but Microsoft Corp. seems to have a completely different opinion. According to a comment made unofficially, the forthcoming Xbox One is not only designed for ten-year lifecycle, but every single system should last for a decade. After massive reliability-related scandal that the current-generation Xbox 360 faced early in its lifecycle, Microsoft decided to play it safe and put reliability of its hardware designs on top of everything, reports EuroGamer web-site. As a result, not only the Xbox One has been developed to stay relevant during its ten-year lifecycle, but every single console that will be sold during this period should actually last for ten years while being switched on. Long lifecycles of gaming platform sound unbelievable, but it is likely that both Microsoft Xbox 360 and Sony PlayStation 3 will remain supported by game developers for two or three years, which proves that a decade-long cycles are indeed possible. What is interesting is that many features of Microsoft Xbox One require it to stay switched on, but in sleep mode. The software giant believes that the quality of the console’s design is so high and so reliable that even the consoles acquired in 2013 will be able to last till 2023, an unbelievable lifespan by today’s standards.
