Intel Celebrates Tenth Anniversary of Extreme Processors with Ivy Bridge-E Launch

From X-bit Labs: Intel Corp. on Tuesday formally unveiled its new-generation Extreme-series microprocessors to mark the tenth anniversary of the product line aimed at hardcore gamers and performance enthusiasts. Exact specifications of the new chips have been known for months now, but the central processing units code-named Ivy Bridge-E will be available starting from next week.

“We are thrilled to debut our latest generation of ‘Extreme’ desktop CPUs. With twelve processing threads and four memory channels on our latest 22nm manufacturing process, this processor delivers exceptional performance for desktop PC power users,” said Lisa Graff, vice president of Intel’s PC client group and general manager of desktop client platforms.

Intel plans to release three “Ivy Bridge-E” central processing units this year: Core i7-4960X, Core i7-4930K and Core i7-4820K. Two of the new microprocessors will feature six cores and one will sport four cores. The new products will feature a little higher clock-speed compared to existing Core i7 “Sandy Bridge-E” microprocessors and will continue to feature 130W thermal design power. All LGA2011 high-end desktop chips feature quad-channel memory controller and up to 40 PCI Express 3.0 lanes.

Three new SKUs will be available next week ranging from four to six cores and from $310 to $999. Besides, expect high-performance systems from Intel partners such as Alienware, iBuyPower and Cyberpower and many others that will be some of the most premium configurations on the market.
