Twitter's Trails Snapchat, Dwarfed by Facebook In Daily Active Users

From PC Mag: Twitter has long relied on monthly active user (MAU) metrics in earnings reports to talk about its platform growth, or lack thereof. But as user growth has flattened and begun to decline, the social media company finally disclosed its daily active user numbers.

According to its fourth-quarter 2018 earnings report to shareholders, Twitter has 126 million "monetizable daily active users," which the company refers to by the clunky acronym of mDAUs. Twitter defines mDAUs as "users who log in and access Twitter on any given day through Twitter.com or our Twitter applications that are able to show ads."

Despite 9 percent year-over-year growth, according to the report, Twitter's 126 million users are still 60 million less than Snapchat's 186 million DAUs. Breaking down Twitter and Snapchat's user bases more closely, 66 percent of Snapchat's monthly users actually use the app daily, compared to only 39 percent of monthly Twitter users than count as DAUs.

For scale, Twitter and Snapchat's user bases both pale in comparison to Facebook, which sits more than a dozen times higher than Twitter at over 1.5 billion DAUs. Even as Facebook's own user growth in the U.S. has leveled off amidst its myriad controversies and scandals, its combined app portfolio of the main Facebook app, Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp dwarf the competition in terms of active users by any measure.
