Google Chrome Adding 'Link to Word' Feature

From PC Mag: We're all used to sending someone a link to a web page and telling them to read something specific on there, but Google looks to be taking things to the next level by allowing links in Chrome to focus on a specific word or sentence on a page.

As Chrome Story reports, the new feature is called Scroll to Text and it is based on an existing GitHub project by Chromium engineer David Bokan. Google's Chrome team is simply porting the feature over to the browser so as to offer it to users.

As the GitHub page explains, Scroll to Text solves a problem, specifically, "We would like to enable users to link to the relevant section of a document directly. Linking directly to the relevant section of a document preserves attribution, and allows the user following the URL to engage directly with the original publisher."

But what does this feature do exactly, and how will it work?

Scroll to Text works in a similar way to timestamps in YouTube videos. If you want to share a YouTube video, but have it start playing at a specific time, you can include that as part of the link. The same will be true for Scroll to Text. If there's a specific word or sentence you want a page to load to, then a #targetText tag can be used as part of the URL. Want the first occurrence of "Hello" to be the focus? then include #targetText=Hello in the URL.
