Amazon Adds Front Light to Its Low-Cost Kindle

From PC Mag: The e-reading world just got brighter. Amazon today announced a new base-model Kindle with a front light for $89.99, making it the first Kindle under $100 with a built-in light for reading at night.

While everybody seems to have a smartphone now, which support e-book reading apps, Amazon's Kindle business is still booming, says Kevin Keith, VP of Amazon Devices. I understand why. In a very noisy world, sometimes you want to rest your eyes and quiet the noise in your brain. The Kindle's distraction-free, E Ink display is there for you.

"The idea of having this great reading experience for customers that is free of distractions, has really fueled our business. Over 11 years, last year we had our single biggest sales day" when the new Paperwhite came out, Keith said.

The new Kindle seems relatively similar to the existing base model. We haven't had hands-on time with it yet, but it looks like a similarly sized plastic rectangle with a recessed, 6-inch, 167ppi E Ink screen. The screen formulation has been improved, but Amazon didn't explain how. The screen has also been upgraded with capacitive touch to prevent accidental swipes, the company says. The new adjustable front-light is blue only, unlike Kobo's color-changing front light, but you can change the brightness.
