Pixel 4 Turns Off 90Hz Refresh Below 75 Percent Brightness

From PC Mag: One of the new, desirable features of the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL is the inclusion of an OLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate, which promises a very smooth Android experience. However, it's been discovered the refresh reverts to just 60Hz when the screen brightness is lowered.

As DroidLife reports, the change in refresh rate was first talked about on Reddit. Testing revealed that the 90Hz rate is only maintained when the screen brightness is set above 75 percent. Below that, the rate drops to 60Hz. So if you use your Pixel 4 indoors most of the time, or just prefer to have the brightness turned down, you won't get to enjoy the 90Hz refresh rate by default.

It's unclear why Google decided to do this, but it's most likely to help with battery life. In the Pixel 4 especially, the 2,800mAh battery needs all the help it can get to make it through a day. However, I'm sure many potential Pixel 4 owners are going to purchase either model expecting to enjoy the 90Hz refresh rate all the time, but this simply won't be the case.
