Instagram Rolls Out Auto-Captions for Stories

From PC Mag: Instagram is finally rolling out automatic captions in Stories. The accessibility feature makes it easier for people who are deaf, hard of hearing, or just like keeping their phone on mute to engage with more content.

Record a video using the Stories camera or upload a saved clip from your gallery, then open the sticker tray and look for the blue "Captions" option, which can automatically convert your speech to text. In true Instagram fashion, users may edit the style, position, and color of dialog, which appears in your video for viewers to read. There is currently no way to highlight text for better contrast, and the function only offers a few font types. But you can avoid embarrassment by simply tapping the text to fix any spelling or grammatical errors.

"You may not always be somewhere where you want your sound on, yet you still want to see what your friends and creators are posting," the company said in a statement published by CNET. "With captions, people can now express themselves in a more effortless yet still meaningful way, and their audiences can watch and still engage."

The function is currently available for Stories users in a "handful" of English-speaking countries; Instagram will expand into more locations and languages soon, and plans to begin testing captions in its quick-hit video maker Reels. The social network has previously enabled support for subtitles on IGTV, but the long-form video app doesn't boast as far a reach as Stories or Reels.
