Amazon's New Echo Show Lineup Includes a Kid-Friendly Smart Display

From PC Mag: Amazon today introduced its latest Echo Show devices—including the first model aimed at children. Assuming you're not video-called out by now, Amazon's new smart displays have all the makings of a virtual reunion, powered by better cameras and enhanced AI.

As its name suggests, the mid-sized Echo Show 8 features an 8-inch HD, adaptive color display with built-in 13-megapixel camera—now capable of panning and zooming during video calls, so everyone stays in frame and on screen.

Kick off a video conference by saying, "Alexa, call my family" or "Alexa, join my Zoom meeting," then surprise coworkers, friends, and family with animated visuals and reactions (think floating hearts, laughing faces, and flying confetti). And, coming soon: new augmented reality (AR) effects, so you can appear in street art or a classic painting while chatting from the comfort of your couch.

The smallest of Amazon's smart displays, this 5.5-inch machine boasts an upgraded HD camera with double the pixels—perfect for a quick video call or to drop in on another room in the house. A built-in webcam, meanwhile, pairs easily with the Alexa app to let you check on your home and pets if you're away.

Children are quickly becoming more adept at technology than the generations that came before. So it's no surprise Amazon is catering to youngsters with the brand new Echo Show 5 Kids. Little ones can personalize their home screen, ask Alexa for homework help, make video calls to pre-approved contacts, and set alarms to wake up to the voice of their favorite characters.
