YouTube to Label Videos Containing AI-Generated and Manipulated Content

From PC Mag: YouTube is set to introduce new rules and labels for content that is synthetic or manipulated using AI.

In a blog post, YouTube Product Management vice presidents Jennifer Flannery O'Connor and Emily Moxley explain how the video sharing platform is reacting to content generated or manipulated by AI. The onus is on content creators to pro-actively flag such content, but viewers will also be told when what they are watching isn't real.

YouTube is going to require creators to disclose when they have used AI tools and created "altered or synthetic content that is realistic." New options will appear in the coming months that allow creators to tag their uploads as containing realistic altered or synthetic material. Not disclosing this information will lead to a suspension from the YouTube Partner Program or other undisclosed penalties.

For viewers, YouTube is introducing a couple of new labels. The first is a label added to the description panel that makes it clear some of the content being viewed was altered and synthetic. A second label will be placed more prominently in the video player if the content covers a sensitive topic such as elections or a public health crises.
