From PC Mag: Amazon will shut down Kindle Vella, its platform for episodic stories, in February 2025.
Launched in 2021 on the Kindle app and Amazon website, Kindle Vella allows authors to publish stories one short episode at a time. Readers can unlock the first few episodes for free and then purchase tokens to read more. This model was supposed to give authors a new way to earn royalties, but "Kindle Vella hasn’t caught on as we’d hoped," Amazon says.
Amazon says authors can continue to publish stories, and readers can continue to purchase tokens until Dec. 4. After that, no new tokens or content will be available.
If readers have any tokens left, they can use them to unlock stories until February. If they have tokens left after that, Amazon will provide them with an Amazon gift card of the same value. All unlocked stories and episodes will remain accessible on the Kindle app for iOS and Android even after the program is closed.
