Refunds Headed to Users Who Fell for Fake Antivirus, Computer Repair Scams

From PC Mag: If you bought a computer repair service from Restoro or Reimage, expect to receive a refund. The companies will pay over $25 million to settle claims that they tricked numerous consumers into signing up for their products.

On Monday, the Federal Trade Commission announced it’s preparing to send $25.5 million in payments to affected consumers after the US regulator sued the companies back in 2024.

The Commission also indicates that over 700,000 US consumers, especially older adults, fell for the scheme, which involved falsely telling consumers that their computers were riddled with problems, including viruses. The companies had been promoting the scam since 2018 through pop-up internet ads that offered bogus antivirus scans, claiming users' PCs had already been infected with malware.

As part of its investigation, the FTC purchased products from Restoro and Reimage and encountered the fake antivirus alerts. The companies' telemarketers also recommended that users pay as much as $499 for "repair plans." Restoro and Reimage agreed to a settlement last year.
