From PC Mag: Google has accidentally deleted user data that it may not be able to restore.
At issue is the Timeline feature on Google Maps. When enabled, it keeps a record of the places you have visited. For some, it serves as a cherished reminder of their travels, while for others, it’s just a tool to recall places they may have forgotten.
After multiple Reddit users complained about losing years of their Timeline data earlier this month, Google has now sent them emails saying that the data loss was caused by a technical issue at their end, but only some might be able to recover it.
“We briefly experienced a technical issue that caused the deletion of Timeline data for some people. We’re reaching out as your account may have been impacted. If you have encrypted backups enabled, you may be able to restore your data,” Google says in an email received by a Redditor named sweepernosweeping.
