Netflix Reportedly Plans to Add Live TV Channels to Boost Engagement

From PC Mag: Would you spend more time on Netflix if it had live TV channels? The company's top executives reportedly think you might.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Netflix is experiencing a decline in subscriber engagement, and the streamer’s top executives have discussed adding live TV channels to increase the time subscribers spend on the app.

These channels would continuously stream programs, shows, and movies from a specific genre, so subscribers wouldn't have to spend time deciding what to watch. The move comes as services like Tubi and the Roku Channel continue to see rapid growth, the Journal notes.

Netflix, however, has seen viewership decline for follow-up seasons of popular shows, Bloomberg reports. One Piece dropped 30% of its audience in season two, while Beef dipped more than 70%. Online, many complained about the long wait times between seasons. Others advocated for a return to the weekly drop schedule that's been embraced by streamers like HBO Max and Hulu to build interest. Some shows also probably don't need another season.
