Sony Says No to PS3 Price Cut as the PS3 Outsells Xbox 360 Globally

From DailyTech: Sony has clearly said “no” to calls for a PS3 price cut in time for the holiday season. At the Games 3.0 conference in London, Sony Computer Entertainment managing director Ray Maguire told Videogamer.com a PS3 price cut was not planned.

Maguire was asked directly if Sony was feeling any pressure to cut the price of the PS3 in time for Christmas to which Maguire replied, "Well the pressure comes from the consumers obviously and so therefore there's always pressure on price, but you know we have a business to run, and we have to make sure we're doing the right thing for the shareholders as well."

Maguire justified the decision and added, "At the moment there's a marketplace for PS3 and I think for this particular Christmas, with the kind of quality of games we're seeing coming out this Christmas, I don't think the price of the console is going to be an issue at all."

There is evidence backing up Maguire’s confidence as GameDaily reports the PS3 sold 2.43 million units worldwide for the quarter ended September 30, compared to the Xbox 360’s 2.2 million units for the same time period. PS3 software sales climbed by 10.7 million units to 21.1 million units sold also. Overall the global Xbox 360 installed base is at 24 million compared to 16.84 million for the PS3.
