OCZ Speeds Up Solid-State Drives by Overclocking Memory Buffer

From X-bit Labs: OCZ Technology, a leading supplier of advanced components for personal computers, last week unveiled its new family of solid-state drives (SSDs) that features host controller and DRAM memory buffer operating at increased clock-speeds. The new SSDs will hardly be much faster than comparable devices in real-world applications, still, for those who are looking for maximum performance possible, even a tiny increase may seem important.

The Vertex Turbo Series maximizes SSD performance by increasing both the host clock-speed and the 64MB SDR DRAM cache frequency to 180MHz versus 166MHz on the original series. OCZ Vertex Turbo SSDs will be available in 30GB, 60GB, 120GB and 250GB capacities. Based on the company’s estimates, Vertex Turbo can provide 20% - 42% improved sustained write speed compared to the original Vertex SSDs.

“The new Vertex Turbo makes use of the fastest SDR DRAM cache available and a proprietary FTL level firmware that provides an even faster solid state drive for enthusiasts looking for the ultimate desktop or laptop storage upgrade,” said Ryan Edwards, director of product management for the OCZ Technology.

Pricing of OCZ Vertex Turbo solid-state drives has not been announced.
