SilverStone Extreme 650Rz Gold 650W Report (Page 2 of 4)

Page 2 - Physical Look - Outside

The SilverStone Extreme 650Rz Gold 650W is only available in black. On either side of the power supply, the side label displays the SilverStone company logo, product name, and its Gold efficiency rating. Interestingly, the stickers are oriented in opposite directions relative to one another. This design signals to users that the power supply can be installed with the fan facing either upward or downward while still ensuring that the branding and certification information remain readable. The exterior housing is constructed from folded metal panels with a matte black finish, which helps reduce visible fingerprints and glare. The edges of the enclosure are cleanly formed with no exposed sharp corners, contributing to safer handling during installation.

For its physical size, the SilverStone Extreme 650Rz Gold 650W is an SFX power supply unit, meaning it is significantly more compact than an ATX power supply unit. It has dimensions of 125mm in length, 100mm in width, and 63.5mm in height, which follows the standard SFX power supply unit dimensions. With a power density of 818.9W per liter, the SilverStone Extreme 650Rz Gold 650W sits at the higher end of the power delivery-to-size spectrum. As an SFX unit, the power supply is designed to be compatible with computer cases that support this mounting standard, or ATX through the use of an adapter bracket. As previously mentioned, an adapter bracket is included if you need one.

In the photo above, the grille covering the intake fan can be seen. It features a circular pattern with thicker bars separating the grille into quadrants. The use of fewer, thicker bars, rather than a densely meshed grille, helps reduce airflow resistance while still providing mechanical protection. The 92mm fan beneath the grille draws air over the internal components before exhausting it through the rear of the unit. Overall, the intake grille design balances structural rigidity with sufficient open area to allow effective airflow into the power supply.

The power supply is held together by twelve screws located on the top, sides, and the rear panels. Some of these screws are hidden behind labels or warning stickers. Removing any seals or stickers to open the power supply unit may invalidate the three-year warranty for the SilverStone Extreme 650Rz Gold 650W. These stickers also serve as tamper-evident seals and discourage user access to internal components that may retain energy even after the unit has been disconnected from power.

On the rear of the power supply is a standard honeycomb-style ventilation grille that allows hot air to exhaust from the unit. Adjacent to the ventilation grille is a horizontally oriented male IEC C13 AC input connector, with the main power switch located directly beneath it. The use of a standard C13 connector ensures compatibility with widely available power cables and simplifies replacement if the cable is damaged or misplaced.

No additional switches are present to manually disable the cooling fan. However, according to the manufacturer, the fluid dynamic bearing fan features an intelligent deactivation function. This design choice aligns with most modern power supplies, as fan operation is automatically controlled based on system load and internal temperature. This effectively eliminates the need for a manual fan switch altogether.

As with most modern power supplies, the SilverStone Extreme 650Rz Gold 650W features a fully modular cable design, meaning all power cables are detachable from the main unit. The rear modular interface is clearly labeled when the power supply is oriented with the fan facing downward, and connectors are grouped using outlined markings for improved clarity.

In the top-left region is the split 24-pin ATX motherboard connection, implemented as two PSU-side connectors. Directly below it on the left is a 12V-2x6 PCIe Gen 5 graphics card connector. This is able to deliver up to 450W to your GPU. To the right are three 6-pin modular outputs designated for peripheral power cables, such as SATA and Molex. Along the bottom are three 8-pin modular outputs labeled EPS and PCIe, which may be used for either CPU EPS power or PCIe graphics card power, depending on the cable attached.

Overall, the build quality of the SilverStone Extreme 650Rz Gold 650W is good. The panels feel durable, and the compact design leaves minimal gaps between seams. The connectors remain firmly seated once plugged in. Additionally, due to the material used for the enclosure panels, the power supply is not easily scratched. The enclosure also exhibits minimal flex under light pressure, indicating sufficient structural rigidity for regular handling and installation.

The voltage specification label is located on the side opposite the intake fan. As indicated on the label, the +3.3V rail can deliver up to 20A for a total of 66W, while the +5V rail can deliver up to 20A for a total of 100W. The total combined output for the minor rails is 100W, which is common and sufficient for modern PCs. The +12V rail is rated for up to 54.1A, corresponding to a maximum output of 649.2W. This is about the same as the rated 650W combined overall for all three power rails.

In terms of efficiency ratings, the SilverStone Extreme 650Rz Gold 650W is certified 80 PLUS Gold, but does not have a Cybenetics certification. This certification indicates a minimum efficiency of 87% at 20% and 100% load, respectively, and 90% efficiency at 50% load, under standard 115V input conditions. Higher efficiency reduces power loss in the form of heat, which improves thermal performance, lowers fan noise, and contributes to improved long-term reliability. It should be noted that the 80 PLUS certification evaluates efficiency only and does not directly assess voltage regulation accuracy, output ripple, or transient response. There are also higher tiers above the 80 PLUS Gold certification, such as 80 PLUS Platinum and 80 PLUS Titanium.

A total of seven modular power cables are included in the box and are bundled together using plastic twist ties. All modular cables are flat and black in color. The following cables are included out of the box:

- 1x ATX 20+4 pin, 30.0cm
- 1x ATX/EPS 4+4 pin, 2 connectors, 40.0cm to first connector, 15.0cm spacing thereafter
- 2x PCIe 6+2 pin, 2 connectors each, 40.0cm to first connector, 12.0cm spacing thereafter
- 1x Molex 4 pin, 3 connectors, 30.0cm to first connector, 12.0cm spacing thereafter
- 2x SATA, 3 connectors each, 30.0cm to first connector, 12.0cm spacing thereafter

Oddly enough, even with a 12V-2x6 connector on the power supply, a cable is not included out of the box, and you will need to obtain one separately if you desire to use it. These measurements are specified by the manufacturer. Overall, the SilverStone Extreme 650Rz Gold SFX power supply offers a well-balanced connector layout with optimized cable lengths, making it well-suited for modern, high-performance small form factor PC builds.
