The Epomaker TH40 is a 40% wireless mechanical keyboard that appears to be an enthusiast’s passion project. Its tiny size makes for great portability, and the included carry strap seems to imply on-the-go use. The keyboard’s design is clean, with a black plastic exterior and rounded corners and edges. The keycaps are made out of PBT plastic with durable dye-subbed legends. The keyboard is solid with minimal case flex, and features a polycarbonate backplate with gasket mounting for a lightly damped typing experience. The Epomaker Flamingo switches are factory-lubricated, smooth, linear, and mounted onto south-facing five-pin hot swap sockets. They offer excellent typing response and has a pleasant clack when bottoming out. The TH40 can be used wirelessly over 2.4GHz at 1000Hz polling, via Bluetooth at 125Hz, or wired over USB Type-C. RGB LED lighting modes are built into the keyboard and shine brightly through the gaps. Key functions and customizations can be programmed through the VIA application, and layers can be set to give the keyboard additional functionality. Due to the TH40’s compact size, compromises had to be made. The keyboard layout lacks certain punctuation keys, and the number row and arrow keys are hidden behind the function layer. The battery life is moderate at approximately 30 hours on 2.4GHz with the lights turned on, but it can be extended when using Bluetooth with the lights off. At a price of $80 USD, the TH40 is an enjoyable keyboard for very specific users who value portability and minimalism at the expense of utility.
