To start, I followed the instructions printed on the super large setup poster. This involves taking out the aluminum five star base, plugging the 65mm hubless caster wheels in, and inserting the 120mm Class 4 pneumatic cylinder at the top. The base assembly is now complete.
The seat bottom is installed onto the base assembly by simply dropping it in. The arms are not installed out of the box, but all you need to do is align it into the position you want and attach three hex screws on each side of the steel brackets, as shown in the above photo. A hex key is included. I positioned mine in the middle for the medium-size person configuration, but you can adjust how close or how far the armrests are relative to the base depending on how big you are.
Next, slide the glass fiber reinforced seat back into seat bottom and align it into place using the dual keyhole mounting system. The keyhole mounting system is a nice feature, since it allows the chair assembly process to be completed by one person rather than having a second person hold the seat back in place while the first person attaches the initial stabilizing screws. Finally, tighten the two hex screws in the keyhole mounting system, add the two locking hex screws, and the assembly process is now complete.
Impressively, the total assembly time was less than twenty minutes by myself, and this included the time I used to take photos for this review. Overall, I found the assembly process to be quite painless, thanks to Fractal Design's great packaging, crystal clear big poster instructions, and well-designed hardware. I did cheat a bit using a Milwaukee impact driver, but there are only ten hex screws in total, so even if you use the included hex key, it will not take significantly longer.
