About HD Tach 3.0.1.0
HD Tach is a low level hardware benchmark for random access read/write storage devices such as hard drives, removable drives (ZIP/JAZZ), flash devices, and RAID arrays. HD Tach uses custom device drivers and other low level Windows interfaces to bypass as many layers of software as possible and get as close to the physical performance of the device possible.

Now, it is the time for good old HD Tach. While HD Tach is more of a 'drag race' than a clear indication of real life performance, and has been around for a really long time, it is an excellent storage performance reference between hard drives for more than the last decade. Back in the days, if your average speed exceeded 60MB/s, you have a seriously fast drive. Where does the HGST Deskstar NAS 4TB come in? With an average read speed of 158.0MB/s, it is, by no doubt, fast. But how does it compare against the competition? Interestingly, the 5,900 RPM Seagate was actually the fastest of the trio in this test, with an average read speed of 166.8MB/s. The 5,400RPM WD Red came in at 147.9MB/s. That said, with the highest rotational speed in the class, the Hitachi did the best with a random access time at 11.7ms; compared to Seagate's 14.9ms and Western Digital's 12.8ms. The other two drives has higher density platters, which contributed to its comparable performance against the HGST.
