PCMark 7 aims to shed a little more insight into real life performance of your computer hardware by semi-synthetic means -- and all insight is good, right? The great thing about standardized tests is anyone can repeat them and get very similar results, given identical hardware. While PCMark 7 is more of a Windows desktop environment based test, it reveals quite a bit about the application performance of the tested storage devices. Well, I am not going to narrate the stuff above in detail, because we all know graphs are there for a very good reason. As you can see in our results above, the HGST Deskstar NAS 4TB handily won every single test; some with pretty large margins. Below the Hitachi, Western Digital's Red 4TB and Seagate's NAS HDD 4TB traded punches here and there; the Seagate took two ahead of the Western Digital, while the Western Digital took six ahead of the Seagate, with some closer than others. While the 5,400 RPM WD Red and 5,900 RPM Seagate NAS HDD are made specifically for network attached storage systems with special hardware and firmware, the 7,200 RPM Deskstar NAS is probably closer to being a rebranded desktop drive than the other two, and this orientation is represented to an extent in our results above.
