ROCCAT Vulcan II Mini Air Review (Page 3 of 3)

Page 3 - Conclusion

With a refreshing jump back to ROCCAT's keyboards, the Vulcan II Mini Air was yet another enjoyable experience. Starting from the physical design, we have an iconic look with their island-style keys and exposed keyswitches. Its build quality is up to par with what we have seen in the past, including no rattle on any of the stabilized keys. Underneath, the two pairs of kickstands are implemented well and offers users the option to choose between different heights. Under each key is the Titan II Optical switch, which has smooth actuation and a long lifespan. As for its usability, secondary functions are imperative for a keyboard of this form factor, and the Vulcan II Mini Air's implementation is excellent. Not only are there many, but the second set of lights to illuminate these keys makes it easy for users to find what they are looking for. There are functions for volume, media playback, lighting control, and wireless connections, while their Easy-Shift unlocks another layer of Macro execution. Their Smart Key functions also add a bit more usability to their Dual LED lights. The overall lighting situation is also vibrant with the illumination spilling out the sides for a neat look. The primary update here is the wireless connectivity, and the Vulcan II Mini Air connects with the dongle or Bluetooth. We have good battery life with proximity sensors to extend this time. On the other hand, there are a few things I still want improved. Physically, we should only see PBT keycaps at this price point. A lack of a wrist rest may also be a bummer for some. As for software, Swarm is in dire need of a major visual overhaul or replacement. I also want more user-configurable options with the Smart Key battery life indicators. At the time of the review, the Vulcan II Mini Air launches at a retail price of $180, which is costlier than the original. Considering we now have wireless connectivity, this is understandable. As such, I think the ROCCAT Vulcan II Mini Air is a strong contender for a small form factor keyboard now with capability of taking it on the go.
