Seagate IronWolf ST12000VN0007 12TB Review (Page 11 of 11)

Page 11 - Conclusion

Compared to the Seagate IronWolf Pro ST12000NE0007 12TB, the IronWolf ST12000VN0007 12TB we are reviewing today gives up a few things: Three-year warranty rather than five, no included recovery services, 180TB/year workload limit rating rather than 300TB/year, and compatibility with NAS systems with up to eight drives rather than sixteen. Are these sacrifices worth it? Well, I will give you the obviously answer: If your workload exceeds 180TB/year or you plan to install it in a NAS with nine or more drives, then I will have to recommend the IronWolf Pro. But for everything else, keeping an extra $40 in your pocket could be a wise choice. $40 may not seem to be a lot of money, but for an average sized NAS with four bays, your savings will be $160 -- hardly chump change if you ask me. You will still get rotational vibration sensors and great power efficiency (The IronWolf uses no more power than the IronWolf Pro), and perhaps the most surprising element of them all, the vanilla version is marginally faster than the Pro version in most benchmarks. The Seagate IronWolf ST12000VN0007 12TB is one of the fastest mechanical hard drives at press time, and with its colossal 12TB capacity, this is also the biggest hard drive money can buy. For about $430 at press time, it is cheaper than both the IronWolf Pro 12TB and BarraCuda Pro 12TB. Even if you plan to buy it for desktop use, the ST12000VN0007 will store anything you throw at it for years to come at a very compelling price.

Since April 30, 2007, Number Ratings have been dropped for all CPUs, motherboards, RAM, SSD/HDDs, and graphics cards. This is to ensure the most appropriate ratings are reflected without the inherent limits of using numbers. Everything else will continue using the Number Rating System.
