SilverStone DC01 Review (Page 5 of 5)

The dual core ARM 11 processor also kept up with our demands quite well. To simulate a more demanding home environment, I've got two separate computers copying data and streaming 1080p video concurrently, along with another PC uploading files to the SilverStone DC01 -- all at the same time. Surprisingly, there was little to no sign in terms of slowness or lag spikes. There was no streaming lag either, but we have noticed a slight slowdown in file transfer rate.

The SilverStone DC01 is a simple and practical NAS created mainly for those who want something cheap and centralized for data access on a simple home network. At press time, the DC01 will run at approximately $145. With a couple of tweaks here and there after startup, it serves as a convenient method of accessing all your data. For what it's worth, once you get it going, there is quite a bit to like about this NAS. Firstly, it delivers surprisingly good performance for the price, and that is something I did not expect. Secondly, in my personal opinion, its physical design is very simple and good looking, while incorporating a sense of practically in an exuberantly small size. Being made out of aluminum and SECC, it has a very nice appearance, as well as a solid feel. Although you may not be moving it around very much, it is quite lightweight, and I really like that. To be honest, I am no Apple fanboy, and my first impressions of the DC01 were slightly on the downside -- but once it was up and running with everything configured, it was a whole different story. On that note, however, even with a nice web interface, getting all the features set up in such an interface may prove to be somewhat difficult in the beginning, even for myself. With file sharing as a prominent feature on a NAS, I expect that user account control and network folder permissions are lacking in practicality. As well, support for more internal drives would be much more convenient when it boils down to installation and RAID configuration. If improvements were made in this area, the SiverStone DC01 would definitely be worth the money in my books.
