Nintendo to Drop Wii Price This Month – Advertisement

From X-bit Labs: Nintendo is projected to reduce the price of its massively popular Wii game console by $50 later this month, according to an advertisement of Toys R Us retail chain. The move is likely to boost sales of Wii and affect sales of competing offerings, namely Microsoft Xbox 360 and Sony PlayStation 3.

The billboard of Toys R Us from a local print media that was published by Kotaku web-site advertises Nintendo Wii game console at $199 price-point, which is $50 below current price. At the new price-point Nintendo Wii will cost exactly the same amount of money as Xbox 360 Arcade from Microsoft.

Despite of higher cost compared to the Xbox 360 Arcade, Nintendo Wii has been considerably better seller compared to its rival and Sony PlayStation 3 thanks to innovative motion-sensing game controller. The price-drop should catalyze even more people to get Nintendo Wii.

It remains to be seen whether the company also has plans to make Wii more affordable outside the U.S. The actual announcement can be made later this month during Tokyo Game Show or Kyoto Cross Media Experience 2009.
