From PC Mag: To combat bullying, Instagram will use AI-powered algorithms to detect whether a post you're about to make contains offensive content.
The anti-bullying feature is designed to make users pause and rethink publishing a post that may end up harassing or ridiculing someone. "Today, when someone writes a caption for a feed post and our AI detects the caption as potentially offensive, they will receive a prompt informing them that their caption is similar to those reported for bullying," Instagram said in a Monday blog post.
The feature represents the tech industry's latest effort to use artificial intelligence to tackle the problem of content moderation. Facebook-owned Instagram currently uses both human staffers and computer algorithms to help it take down illegal and abusive posts. But this often occurs after the content has been published, giving it a chance to circulate.
In response, Instagram has started applying AI to the pre-posting process in an effort to nudge users away from publishing content that violates the platform's rules. Back in July, it began rolling out the technology for user-generated comments with a little warning that says: "Are you sure you want to post this?"
"From early tests of this feature, we have found that it encourages some people to undo their comment and share something less hurtful once they have had a chance to reflect," Instagram said at the time. Now the platform is putting the technology to use on user-generated posts, saying its algorithms can detect different forms of bullying.
