From CNET: Verizon and the US Consumer Product Safety Commission put out a recall Thursday for the carrier's Ellipsis Jetpack mobile hotspots, saying the gadgets have a lithium-ion battery that can overheat and create a fire or burn hazard. Verizon said it's already sent out an update for the device that will reduce some of the overheating risk but that the company will also provide free replacement devices.
There are 2.5 million affected units, with model numbers MHS900L, MHS900LS and MHS900LPP.
"We are taking the situation very seriously, and we are working diligently to determine the cause of the issues with the supplier and to provide replacement devices for all of our customers, free of charge," Verizon said in a statement.
Device owners can contact Verizon to send in their mobile hotspot. Those who've decided to keep their devices are advised to use only an approved cable, turn off the device when not in use, keep it on a flat surface, and keep it away from water or extreme temperatures.
