Twitter Starts Testing 'Communities' Feature

From PC Mag: Twitter is testing a new way for like-minded users to connect. Currently in beta for iOS and the web, Communities are created by and for people who share interests and want to have relevant conversations about them.

Join a Community to tweet directly to that group rather than the wider Twitterverse. Community pages and timelines are publicly available, so anyone can read, quote tweet, or report content. Only members of the group itself can engage and participate in discussion, though.

"We want to continue to support public conversation and help people find Communities that match their interests, while also creating a more intimate space for conversation," David Regan, staff product manager at Twitter, wrote in a blog announcement. Members can access Communities through the dedicated tab at the bottom of the iOS app or in the sidebar on Twitter.com. Android users can expect to gain the same functionality soon.

Early test Communities cover "popular conversation" topics, including dogs, weather, sneakers, skincare, and astrology, "with many more to come, reflecting more of the thriving and niche discussions on Twitter," the social network said. Sign up online to register your interest in building your own Community.
