From PC World: Microsoft has begun testing support for WebP images (.webp) as desktop backgrounds in Windows 11, reports Windows Latest. It’s available in the Preview version of Windows 11 (Build 26220.7653) for now and is expected to roll out on Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2.
The new image format support makes it possible to select a WebP image directly via Settings > Personalization > Background, without first having to convert the file to JPEG or PNG.
The WebP format is widely used across the web because it provides high image quality at a significantly smaller file size. The format has long been supported in Windows apps and browsers, but not fully in the operating system’s Background settings.
Microsoft has also previously tested video backgrounds in older pre-releases, with support for formats such as MP4 and WebM. However, this is missing in the latest Preview version of Windows 11.
