Adobe Unveils Digital Viewer Technology for Magazines

From DailyTech: Adobe Systems Incorporated just announced a new, digital viewer that allows magazine publishers to create digital versions of their magazines, and Wired Magazine has already jumped on the opportunity selling 24,000 digital copies of their iPad app during the first 24 hours of availability.

The software was created by Adobe using inDesign CS5 and other Adobe publishing technologies.Wired Magazine, owned by Condé Nast, offered input during development, and in turn, their issue was built using Adobe's new digital viewer software and made into an iPad app. But due to recent battles between Apple and Adobe, the new app will not run Flash.

The digital reader includes interactive features such as slideshows, 360 degree images, video content and rotate content in horizontal and vertical modes. In addition, it offers touch gestures like zoomed-out browse mode allowing users to see the content of an issue at a glance.

"Adobe's work with Wired has resulted in a digital magazine format that creates an immersive experience, allowing a publications; unique content, look and feel and advertising to stand out in the digital realm," said David Burkett, vice president and general manager of Creative Solutions at Adobe.

"We aim to make our digital viewer software available to all publishers soon and plan to deliver versions that work across multiple hardware platforms. It's safe to say that if you are already working in inDesign CS5, you'll be well on your way to producing a beautiful digital version of your publication."
