Microsoft Releases Windows 7 SP1 to OEMs

From DailyTech: Microsoft has released to OEMs its latest service pack -- an update that contains compiled Windows Update bugfixes and, typically, a handful of new features. The new service pack is the first for the best-selling Windows 7 operating system and the Windows Server 2008 R2 operating system.

For IT folks, the update packs two big new features -- RemoteFX and Dynamic Memory within Hyper-V. The first allows you to get better graphics (even 3D animation) on thin clients. The latter allows you to distribute memory more easily and efficiently on a virtualized architecture with thin clients.

Typically public releases of Service Packs trail OEM releases by anywhere from a few days to a week or two. Consumers can expect, however, that Windows 7 SP1 will land very soon.

On the consumer side, the service pack is expected to provide better support for/optimizations to Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. It is also expected to officially offer full USB 3.0 support for the first time.

In its announcement [blog] of the release to OEMs, Microsoft's Gavriella Schuster reveals that Microsoft will in March separately release a tool called Microsoft BitLocker Administration and Monitoring (MBAM). As the name suggests, that tool makes it easier for administrators to use and control the BitLocker encryption technology, which is built into the latest generation of Microsoft operating systems.
