Microsoft Wants Samsung Electronics to Pay $15 for Each Android-Based Phones

From X-bit Labs: Microsoft Corp. reportedly wants Samsung Electronics to pay massive licensing fees for each handset that feature Google Android operating system as the latter, the software giant believes, infringes its patents and utilizes technologies originally developed by Microsoft. Samsung is reportedly negotiating with the Redmond, Washington software developer.

Microsoft demands $15 for each Google Android-based smartphone from Samsung, which is a massive amount of money, given the current situation on the market of smartphones. Samsung agrees to pay $10 per smartphone "in exchange for a deeper alliance with Microsoft" for the Windows Phone platform, according to a report from Reuters news-agency that cites Maeil Business Newspaper which quoted unnamed industry officials as saying.

The world's largest maker of software is trying hard to promote its Windows Phone 7 platform, but without much success so far as both Apple iOS and Google Android have been gaining adoption much faster than Microsoft Windows Phone 7 and the trend is unlikely to be reversed for several more quarters.

Charging Samsung Electronics, which is currently the largest supplier of Android-based mobile phones, for patents will not only give Microsoft additional money, but will may also make it easier for the software firm to sell its WP7 operating system to Samsung. But making Android more expensive for manufacturers of phones does not automatically make Windows Phone 7 more competitive than Android, which is why it will hardly translate into larger sales of Microsoft-powered handsets.
