Microsoft Xbox 360 U.S. Best Selling Game Console in 2011

From X-bit Labs: Microsoft Corp. said that during the year 2011 it had managed to outsell its "closest rival" by 2.7 million units with its Xbox 360 game console in the U.S. in 2011, according to NPD market tracker. Citing the numbers from NPD, Microsoft said it also won the holiday season from Nintendo Wii and Sony PlayStation.

While Microsoft did not indicate how many Xbox 360 video game consoles it sold in the U.S. exactly throughout the 2011, it said that the platform held 46% of the current-gen game console market. The software giant stressed: Xbox 360 sold more than 1.7 million units in December, solidifying the No.1 console spot in the U.S. for 2011.

Based on numbers from Vgchartz web-site, which allegedly includes data from world's class market research companies like NPD or Media Create, the X360 is ahead in terms of sales only in the U.S. A good thing for the X360 is that the platform (hardware, software and accessories) reached $1.5 billion, the most for any console in the U.S. Still, X360 is only a tad ahead of PS3 based on worldwide numbers, according to Vgchartz.

The software giant also claims that total retail $ spent on the Xbox 360 platform (hardware, software and accessories) reached $1.5 billion in 2011, the most for any console in the U.S.

What should be kept in mind is that Microsoft Xbox 360 is massively and overwhelmingly successful only in the U.S. There is a different situation in the European Union and Japan, where Sony and Nintendo brands are very strong.
