Asustek Begins to Sell Mainstream Notebooks with Touchscreens

From X-bit Labs: Asustek Computer on Tuesday started to sell mainstream VivoBook S500 and S550 laptops with Windows 8 operating system and 15.6” multi-touch-enabled displays. The VivoBook S500 laptops will be among the most affordable laptops with touchscreens in Asus’ lineup, yet they will offer rather serious performance. Unfortunately, screen resolution of the mobile PCs is rather low by today’s standards.

Asus VivoBook S500 and S550 laptops are based on Intel Core i-series 3000-family “Ivy Bridge” microprocessors with integrated HD graphics cores as well as Intel 7-series core-logic sets. The systems are equipped with DDR3 memory, 500GB – 1000GB hard drive with 24GB caching solid-state drive option, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, 0.3MP webcam, USB 3.0, SDcard reader and so on. The more advances model VivoBook S550 is also equipped with Nvidia GeForce GT 635M graphics core as well as DVD-RW optical disc drive.

The VivoBook S500-series laptops are feature 15.6" LED backlit capacitive touch panel with multi-touch functionality and 1366*768 resolution, which is pretty low by contemporary standards.

Asus VivoBook S500-series offers stylish design, true-to-life Asus SonicMaster sound, and instinctive touch capabilities via the highly responsive multi-point HD touch panel or the oversized touchpad incorporating Asus Smart Gesture technology. The laptop features 2-second instant on resume from sleep mode provides near-instantaneous access to Windows 8 and its energy-conserving design allows standby for up to two weeks on 4000mAh (44Wh, 3S1P, 3-cell Li-ion) battery.

The new VivoBook S500 laptops with multi-touch displays are only 20.3mm (0.85”) thick and weigh around 2.1 kilograms (4.6lbs). The S550-series models are around 300 grams (0.66 pounds) heavier.

Asus VivoBook S500-series laptops are available today beginning from $699.

Asustek Computer also offers other types of laptops with multi-touch displays, including VivoBook X202E/S200E/Q200E with 11.6” screens as well as VivoBook S400 with 14.1” monitor.
