From DailyTech: Apple sits on a massive cash stockpile meaning that it can easily purchase companies that make hardware and software that it's interested in rather than spending the time to develop its own solutions from scratch. Apple latest acquisition is a second screen TV/video service called Matcha.tv. Matcha.tv is an app for Apple devices that offers users an overview of everything available to watch on television via cable providers, streaming video services, and digital video stores. The app also allows users to manage what they watch from a single universal queue. If this sounds familiar, it’s because this type of functionality is available on devices like the Xbox 360 gaming console and Roku media players. The app offers video recommendations and the ability to connect with social networks to see what friends are watching and liking. The service shut down in May with little explanation despite the fact that its user base was growing and that it was one of the most popular apps in its segment. When the app shut down, CEO Guy Piekarz stated that Matcha.tv would come back in a different direction. Although Apple initially stated that it “buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans," the company later confirmed the purchase to AllThingsD.
