8K TVs Get an Official Definition and Logo

From PC Mag: It's becoming increasingly difficult to buy a new 1080p TV as 4K resolution has become the norm, but now we're getting an official definition and logo for what comes next: 8K Ultra High Definition displays.

The Consumer Technology Association (CTA) has revealed what the requirements are for a television to claim it's officially 8K. The definition is split down into four key areas covering display resolution, digital inputs, up-conversion, and bit depth.

The display resolution must have 33 million+ active pixels and be at least 7,680-by-4,320 with a 16:9 viewable window. All pixels must be individually addressable and demonstrate the full color range the display advertises as having. It must also meet the measurement guidelines specified by the International Committee for Display Metrology (ICDM) using the International Display Measurement Standard (IDMS).

As well as achieving that 8K resolution, every 8K UHD TV must also be capable of upscaling SD, HD, and 4K video to 8K, which will ensure if you upgrade your TV your existing content remains accessible and will probably look a little better.
