From ExtremeTech: OpenAI is reportedly collaborating with the US Department of Defense (DoD). At this week’s World Economic Forum meeting in Davos-Klosters, Switzerland, the ChatGPT and DALL-E maker confirmed that it’s working with the Pentagon to develop cybersecurity tools. The two organizations are also brainstorming ways to prevent veteran suicides.
On Tuesday, Anna Makanju, OpenAI’s vice president of global affairs, dove into the partnership during an interview at Bloomberg House, a leadership hub at Davos. The company’s initial ban on working with military entities was top of mind. “Because we previously had what was essentially a blanket prohibition on military, many people thought that would prohibit many of these use cases, which people think are very much aligned with what we want to see in the world,” Makanju said.
Indeed, OpenAI has removed verbiage from its usage policy that once prohibited using its AI for “military and warfare” purposes. Updated Jan. 10, 2024, the new policy forbids using OpenAI products to “develop or use weapons” and “injure others or destroy property.” Using ChatGPT or DALL-E for military purposes that don’t directly cause death and destruction, then, is apparently fair game.
