Featuring Toshiba's third generation 64 layer BiCS triple-level cells, how good is the TR200 480GB for replacing your aging mechanical hard drive at an affordable price? The answer to this question all boils down to understanding two major aspects of this SSD: Price and performance. The Toshiba OCZ TR200 480GB performed admirably in our linear tests, and posted the highest overall score relative to our selection of budget SSDs from Crucial, Kingston, and even Toshiba themselves in PCMark's simulations that reflect regular computer usage patterns. However, performance took a massive hit in PassMark PerformanceTest's simulated workloads, and the TR200 dropped in dead last -- often by quite a wide margin -- in PCMark 8's storage consistency tests. This shows while the Toshiba OCZ TR200 480GB is great at handling day-to-day computing, it is not designed to do any medium to heavy lifting at all. It is a common phenomenon with SSDs that has no DRAM, which brings us to how much money you are actually saving at the expense of performance. For $150 MSRP at press time, the Toshiba OCZ TR200 480GB simply is not competitive for the price. The 480GB version of Crucial's BX300 delivers considerably better overall performance for $15 less when writing this review. Both feature a three-year limited warranty, but the BX300 has even better write endurance than the TR200's already excellent 120TB. I could not find a retail price for the Toshiba OCZ TR200 480GB, but if you can pick one up for a good chunk less than the BX300, then at least it can be justified by the price. If not, buy the BX300.

Since April 30, 2007, Number Ratings have been dropped for all CPUs, motherboards, RAM, SSD/HDDs, and graphics cards. This is to ensure the most appropriate ratings are reflected without the inherent limits of using numbers. Everything else will continue using the Number Rating System.

Toshiba's OCZ TR200 480GB SSD can replace your aging mechanical hard drive at an affordable price, but the price needs to be even more affordable to be competitive given its performance.
