Firefox's New Redesign Is Only Step One in Mozilla's Plan to Crush Chrome

From PC Mag: Firefox ended 2025 hovering at a grueling 3.5% global market share, according to Cloudflare data. Yet inside Mozilla, head of Firefox Ajit Varma isn't interested in growth hacks or gimmicks—he's betting on a surprisingly radical, old-school philosophy: "Build better features, build a better browser, and then people will use it."

The latest weapon in that crusade is Project Nova, a sleek, modern visual overhaul aimed at dragging Firefox’s aesthetics straight into the modern era. But for Varma—a former Google product director who took the reins at Firefox in late 2025—the mission is personal. Back in 2004, when Mozilla first launched the browser, Varma was an eBay web developer dialing in to public developer meetings, obsessed with the promise of an open web. Two decades later, he’s convinced that same independence makes Mozilla the only entity left capable of fixing how we browse.

Firefox 157, the latest version of the browser, is the culmination of the redesign effort Mozilla calls Project Nova. It introduces a more stylish interface with refreshed colors, icons, and themes. Far more elements, including the address bar and browser tabs, are rounded, too. These changes aren't earth-shattering, but the browser's curves and soft colors nonetheless bring it more in line with current design trends.
