From PC Mag: Security concerns surrounding Meta’s smart glasses just keep piling up. After complaints about nonconsensual video recording, the glasses have now been found to record user audio without consent.
The issue was raised earlier this week by a Reddit user, who noticed that their glasses were saving audio recordings and transcripts of conversations with other people to the Meta AI app, even when they didn’t trigger audio recording with the “Hey Meta” wake phrase or have the “Respond without Hey Meta” setting enabled.
This wasn’t a one-off defect. The Redditor observed the issue across three separate pairs, including the 2nd-gen and 3rd-gen Ray-Ban Meta glasses, while several others agreed they were experiencing the same. The user also noted the white capture LED would occasionally blink while they were just speaking to someone.
When the user reached out to Meta, a support staff member reportedly recommended disabling several settings, including mic and camera permissions. In a statement to Android Authority, the company has now acknowledged the unauthorized recording issue and said it has been fixed.
