Dell Looking Forward PCs with Google Chrome Operating System

From X-bit Labs: Dell, one of the globe’s largest makers of personal computers, said it was looking forward installing Chrome operating system (OS) from Google, the largest search engine and ad broker in the world. Dell claims that Chrome OS will allow it to make PCs more affordable of cost-sensitive markets.

"We have to have a point of view on the industry and technology direction two years, three years down the road, so we continuously work with Google on this. There are going to be unique innovations coming up in the marketplace in two, three years, with a new form of computing, we want to be on that forefront. So with Chrome or Android or anything like that we want to be one of the leaders," said Amit Midha, Dell's president for Greater China and South Asia told Reuters news-agency in an interview.

Google had indicated that it hoped to release its first systems powered by Google Chrome operating system as early as this fall. It is unclear whether those machines – including those made by Dell – will be based on microprocessors powered by x86 architecture chips or by ARM architecture central processing units.

It is noteworthy to mention that Dell has performed numerous attempts to install non-Microsoft operating systems, which power the vast majority of personal computers sold in the world, onto its laptops in the recent years. None of those devices were successful.

Google Chrome operating system greatly relies onto Web-based services provided by Google. As a result it is more than questionable whether the OS can actually compete against Microsoft Windows on a global scale. The Chrome requires constant connection to the Internet to work with productivity applications and it is also not compatible with many popular programs.
