Microsoft Xbox One to Feature Regional Locks

From X-bit Labs: Just a little over six years ago Microsoft Corp. welcome lack of regional locks on HD DVD content, meaning that one disc could be played back by players around the world. However, with the new Xbox One game console the software giant implements regional locks in order to restrict sales of content on different markets. Officially, Microsoft wants to comply with local regulations.

“Similar to the movie and music industry, games must meet country-specific regulatory guidelines before they are cleared for sale. We will continue to work with our partners to follow these guidelines with Xbox One,” said a Microsoft official in a conversation with Digital Trends web-site.

Keeping in mind that in different parts of the world different kind of content is allowed, regional locks make some sense. However, a compliance with any regulation could be achieved by simply not selling certain game discs on certain territories, not by creating special versions of games and/or hardware for a particular jurisdiction.

What is more important for Microsoft is that in different countries hardware and software prices are different and it is possible for people to get content from abroad without paying overprice or taxes.

Microsoft Xbox One video game system will be released later this year. Pricing of the console will differ from region to region.
