From PC Mag: Apple's iPhone Air is struggling to attract customers, and the company plans to significantly reduce its production, according to multiple reports.
The iPhone Air launched as part of the iPhone 17 lineup last month. Measuring 5.6mm at its thinnest edge, it's the slimmest phone Apple has ever made. However, that hasn't translated to positive sales numbers, forcing Apple to reconsider its production plans.
While the forecast for the overall lineup continues to be at 85 million to 90 million units, Apple has cut back on orders for the iPhone Air to nearly "end of production," Nikkei Asia reports.
Initially, Apple had planned to allocate 10-15% of this year's total iPhone production to the Air. However, starting next month, its production will be reduced by at least 10% compared with September levels, the report adds. A separate survey by KeyBanc Capital Markets found that there's "virtually no demand for iPhone Air."
Reports by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and Japan's Mizuho Securities paint a similar picture. Kuo says suppliers may reduce component shipments by 80% between now and the first quarter of 2026, while Mizuho Securities reports that Apple will produce one million fewer iPhone Air units than it had originally projected for this year.
