If there is anything that will drop your jaws at an external solid state drive that looks as conservative as the X8 1TB -- and from a traditionally conservative company that is all business like Crucial -- it would be its performance. The company claims this is one of the fastest portable consumer SSDs in the market today, and based on the results of our benchmarks, their claims are totally legitimate. Whether anyone will need 1050MB/s read in an external storage device is beyond the scope of this review, not to mention saying that is like someone complaining they have too much money in their bank account. The way I see it, speed is like money. You can never have enough, and there are always people who will make use of it. All I know is the Crucial X8 1TB is fast, it is slim enough to fit pretty much anywhere, and the aluminum enclosure is of good quality. You will even get a 3-year warranty to go with it. There are a few areas Crucial can improve on with the X8 though. First, having it officially IP certified will bring more confidence in its durability. Second, add an activity LED so there are visual cues about its operational status. Thirdly, include a longer cable. For about $165 at press time, the X8 1TB is not cheap. You are paying an extra $65 compared to a P1 1TB for a specially designed enclosure and custom firmware. Luke thinks these two are very important factors, and the end results speak for itself.
