The Seagate BarraCuda Pro ST10000DM0004 10TB should require no introduction to those who are familiar with other massive 10TB drives from Seagate like the IronWolf ST10000VN0004 and IronWolf Pro ST10000NE0004. This is the desktop variant of the lineup. Described as having "lightning-fast performance and titanic storage" from the company's promotional material, how much of this holds true? First and foremost, despite having titanic storage, the company wants to assure you it will last longer than the RMS Titanic with a generous five year limited warranty and 300TB per year rated workload limit. The BarraCuda Pro is also extremely fast compared to other hard drives in the market today. It topped the charts in the majority of our tests, and for those benchmarks where it did not win, the BarraCuda Pro was typically not too far off from the top. Also unlike the RMS Titanic, it is very power efficient, thanks to the helium fill. For $490 at press time, the ST10000DM0004 retails for the exact same price as the IronWolf Pro 10TB. I found this to be a little bit surprising, considering the BarraCuda Pro is not dual-plane balanced with rotational vibration sensors for improved operational reliability. I understand these features are orientated towards network attached storage systems and servers, but it really does not hurt to get it on the desktop, too. Especially considering they come at the same price with an almost identical feature set otherwise, I think buying the IronWolf Pro -- even if you are planning to use it in your desktop PC -- makes more sense. However, if the Seagate BarraCuda Pro ST10000DM0004 10TB was a little cheaper, then keep this in mind: If you are planning to buy this hard drive, in Jeremy Clarkson's voice, you are buying one of the biggest and fastest hard drives... in the world.
