Silicon Power Jewel J80 32GB Review (Page 8 of 8)

Page 8 – Conclusion

One thing I left out in the introduction is no matter how you say it, shoes really are still a fashion item more than a functional item. Sure, they get you from place to place, but most people will choose the good looking one over the ugly one. During my high school graduation banquet, a lot of girls wore high heels, and in the process inflicted a lot of pain on themselves. When one girl actually complained to me, I again asked the same question "Why?", all she could reply was that they really looked good. And I had to admit, they did look good on her, but I digress. On the other hand, when we look at any USB drive, we know we have to evaluate it on both the looks and the performance. On the good side, the Jewel J80 will catch the attention of most people, even those who use their computers just to surf Facebook and Reddit. It really is a well-designed product with its full zinc alloy build. Having a loop at the top is also a nice piece, and it allows users to put the Jewel J80 on their own keychains. The COB flash memory also means the Jewel J80 is both small and durable. The fact it can be waterproof without having to be a bulky product is excellent. Unfortunately, the COB manufacturing process displays its negatives when it comes to performance. It is quite literally one of the slowest USB 3.0 drives we have ever tested. It is understandable this Jewel J80 is both limited in size and is not supposed to be a speed demon, but these numbers are pretty low. Therefore, we see a trade-off between style and performance. These numerical differences will not translate into huge real-world differences, and will probably mean a few more seconds waiting at the computer, but this experience and opinion will vary from person to person. At a cost of around $20 USD for 32GB at press time, this is a reasonable price for a small and stylish USB stick. If you are looking for a some sort of storage option to carry around daily without being a hassle, the Silicon Power Jewel J80 32GB should be on your list.

Silicon Power provided this product to APH Networks for the purpose of evaluation.

APH Review Focus Summary:
8/10 means Definitely a very good product with drawbacks that aren't likely going to matter to the end user.
7/10 means Great product with many advantages and certain insignificant drawbacks; but should be considered before purchasing.
-- Final APH Numeric Rating is 7.2/10
Please note that the APH Numeric Rating system is based off our proprietary guidelines in the Review Focus, and should not be compared to other sites.

The Jewel J80 32GB definitely looks great, but Silicon Power has sacrificed some performance to get there.
