One of the most challenging parts in our battery of SSD benchmarks is the PCMark 8 Storage Consistency Test. Nowadays, many drives are well optimized for high benchmark scores when they are empty, but what separates the professional players from the amateurs is how it stands up to a truly punishing workload. PCMark 8's Storage Consistency Test is designed exactly for this purpose. Going through five phases -- precondition, degradation, steady state, recovery, and clean up -- to extend beyond real world application simulations, this benchmark takes just over two days to complete, but the results are revealing of a SSD's true capabilities. Overall, the Toshiba OCZ VX500 512GB's results were excellent. Besides the RD400 512GB, this is the most consistent drive I have ever seen since I started running this benchmark on SSDs here at APH Networks. PCMark 8's Storage Consistency Test provides a clear distinction between product classes. In the degradation phases, the VX500 was more than twice as fast as the Trion 100 and Trion 150, and was at least 50% faster than the Crucial MX300 750GB. Even more impressively, it was, at the minimum, triple the speed of the Kingston UV400 480GB. In fact, in one particular point, the VX500 was a whole order of magnitude faster. The same pattern continued into the steady and recovery phases with incredible consistency. Needless to say, I am impressed by the Toshiba OCZ VX500 512GB's performance in this benchmark.
